Going going going, modes of transportation (Lagos) – Veronika

A few weeks ago Jo and I decided to travel to Lagos with a group trip and see what Portugal is all about. Friday morning we were driven to the train station by Jo’s host father in plenty of time to catch the train. As we sat down, the timetable flashed that the train to Seville would be 1.5 hours late.

When we arrived in Seville my inner GPS took over and we found a Starbucks for lactose free coffee, and our favorite fast food, Cervecería 100 Montaditos.

After lunch we took a hot, long walk to the Portuguese Consulate to wait for our bus. Our bus ride to Lagos was three hours long, with a few naps. When we arrived, we headed down to the beach for tinto de verano and introduced ourselves to the group.

On Saturday and Sunday we enjoyed the refreshing water of the Atlantic ocean and the hotel pool. Jo and I enjoyed some classic American burgers both nights, and danced the night away before catching a taxi back to our hotel.

Saturday evening we watched the sunset from the ‘end of the world’ at Cabo de San Vincent, though the wind almost pushed us off the edge.

Sunday morning we went on a kayak trip through the cliffs off the coast of Lagos. We saw rock formations such as an elephant, a french kiss, and lover’s cave.

Jo and I had a great time in Lagos, and hope to return one day.

Food! – Lally

Lets talk about food!!

If you know me, you know that I have a serious relationship with food. I LOVE FOOD! Most of the time I am willing to try something new at least once!

Since I arrived to this marvelous country, Spain, I have been introduced to a variety of cuisine like jamon serrano, tostadas, Salmorejo, paella, croquetas, along with various types of seafood!

After a week of eating my host family’s delicious food my favorite meal thus far has to be Salmorejo Corbes with a refreshing cup of tinto de verano!

I can’t put my finger on what exactly it is about Salmorejo that has won me over, but I always want to eat it ha!

I am looking forward to returning back home and preparing this dish for my family!

It is definitely the best dish to eat during the summer!

Can’t wait to try new food!

First week in Spain – Lally

After a year of being abroad in Brazil I decided to embark on yet another journey, which is spending my summer interning with Academia Manhattan in Villanueva de Cordoba.

brazil

My first week in Villanueva was amazing. I am enjoying every bit of it since it is completely different from the scenery that I was used to in Brazil. My host family is extremely sweet and welcoming, I feel part of the family!

Interning has been extremely fun! The first few days were a bit crazy because I honestly had no idea what I was doing—like any intern, but with a some help from the other interns (Veronika, Mads, Elise, Jill, and Jo) I now feel comfortable leading English classes! The part I enjoy the most in creating lesson plans for the kiddos i.e word search, & bingo, they get so excited and competitive!

To say the least, I am enjoying the Spaniard lifestyle: daily siestas, amazing cuisine and delicious tinto de verano minus the ridiculous heat.

Adding some PIZZAzz to Villanueva – Jill

Adding some PIZZAzz to Villanueva (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pizzazz)
I want to talk about pizza today. For the last few weeks, the Academia Manhattan team has been going out to Volao on Thursdays. We are fans of the 2-for-1 pizza deal, and it’s a wonderful atmosphere.
Regarding the divine circles of bread-sauce-and-toppings from Volao, I have to put this pizza in its own special category. Pizza is good, no matter where you get it, but the Volao pizza has been super delicious. Where I am from in the United States, our pizzas tend to have a thicker crust and less toppings. The reason to have pizza is often to feed an army of friends or relatives, so we’ll order a lot of pizzas instead of focusing on specific flavor combinations. It’s quantity over quality. (For example, if a someone is moving to a new house and their friends help them move furniture, it is common to buy pizza for the workers as a thank-you.) We do have some really good flavor combinations, like Hawaiian (ham and pineapple) and Veggie Lovers’ (broccoli, peppers, mushrooms, onion, etc.), but we don’t usually have added spices or sauces on our pizza.

At Volao, on the other hand, you can be sure that you’ll get a montón of stuff in your pizza! My personal favorite is the barbacoa pizza. Then it’s the kebab. Also, because the slices of pizza here are smaller, I can try various types of pizza while not over-eating. (Well, it’s possible try everything and overeat, but I’d be lying if I said I have room in my stomach after a Volao night.)
The moral of the story, kids? COME JOIN US AT VOLAO! We will be eating there every Thursday and feel free to dine with us. We will be speaking a mix of Spanish and English so don’t be afraid. Come practice English with us, and enjoy our company! We’re super friendly. And we like to order a lot of pizza.

The Habits They Are A-Changin’ – Jill

Ever since arriving in this beautiful country my habits have changed. For example, in the states I am a “pescatarian” which means I do not eat meat except for fish/seafood (hence the “pesca” root word). But after seeing the famous meat of this region, and realizing that cuisine is an integral part of a culture, I gave in and began to eat meat. Chicken, pork, etc. are now nourishing me every day. My favorite meat has to be the jamon serrano. Seriously, we have a natural connection. It makes me feel alive.
Another change I’m noticing is my aversion to sunlight. Being naturally pale because of my Irish heritage, in addition to my lack of tanned skin (I live in a colder part of New England that does not receive as much sunlight), has made me terrified of burning here. When I went to the beach in Malaga I spent a lot of hours reading underneath a beach umbrella, and when I walk to work I jump from shadow to shadow. I’ve memorized what sides of the street to walk on at different times of day, when the sun is in different positions. When I am in the sun, I automatically feel the burn begin and I rush to the next shadow.
My schedule has changed too. In the United States we do not stay out as late during the summer, but here in Villanueva everyone goes out later in the night for a drink or snails. It now feels more normal to be outside when it is 10 PM- 1 AM. In comparison to my American schedule, I find myself becoming a creature of the night!
So, after thinking about the my changed habits, I can only come to one conclusion. I am actually becoming a vampire.
